Chapter Eight
âHE HIDES HIS true self from others.â I didn't mean to blurt it out to Dr. Francis, but it was obvious to anybody with any semblance of a brain.
âI know, and I have tried to get him to talk about it, but he clams up before he can really delve into his feelings. I suppose as women we should be used to men avoiding their feelings, but in this case I think it pertains to the case. He came here after leaving a lucrative position in the private sector of Dallas, Texas. Nobody knows why he came here, but I suspect he knows more about this killer than he is saying. This is a personal vendetta and I just hope it doesn't destroy him in the process.â
I didn't want that to happen either. I had no idea why I even cared. But I knew I was curious. I also felt the feeling that this was all personal to the detective. Why was that?
When they came out of the room, Timmons was the only one in full uniform. She was probably only put on this assignment because of her brief connection with me. I was led out by this posse of four to a nondescript SUV down the street. They hadnât even allowed me to call into work, but I wasn't going to let that stand without a fight. Kevin needed to know that he was going to be in-charge for the foreseeable future and I didn't see any reason not to contact him.
They didn't know about the tablet in my purse, which was going to make it easier for me to reach out to the outside world.
Kit and Timmons were in the backseat on either side of me when the door opened and psychologist Francis jumped in to join the fray.
âDonât say anything. I am coming with you whether you like it or not. You will need me if Sarah remembers anything else, and I might be able to use some of the tricks of the trade to ferret out anything that remains elusive.â
Kit shook his head, but then turned to the window to look far away. His posture told us that he didn't like her coming along. Did he not believe in what she could do? If it hadn't been for my parentsâ passing, I would probably think the same thing. I now had direct insight into what therapy could do and I don't know where I would have been without having somebody to talk to back then.
Then Kit leaned forward and directed his words to the driver. âRemember not to take a direct route, and Jamison and I will keep an eye out for anybody following.â
That told me that they were worried about the killer being closer than he appeared. In my mind, I suddenly wondered if the killer was a police officer. This must have occurred to Kit because he was now taking every precaution to keep my identity under wraps from anybody that wasnât in this close-knit circle.
